Day 1 - Seoul, Korea

Woke up to pouring rain, but that didn't stop me from heading out to explore. Walked a total of about 6 miles, darting in and out of subway entrances and tiny shops to avoid the heavy downpour that continued on and off all day. In the afternoon, I made my way through alleys, to experience authentic "soul" of Seoul. I popped into a restaurant where 3 older Korean women were peeling onions into pots. It was evident by their expressions that they don't see many tourists! With no menu and obviously no English spoken, I was left to point at something in a pot and perform a soup "charade" ...
Ended up with hotdog and octopus soup. Yep, that's right. Luckily, I had a smorgasbord of interesting pickled veggies to add to the mix. :)

This is a palace gate, built around 1350. The palaces were closed today, but I plan to spend the day tomorrow visiting some of these ancient wonders.

My hostel is is down this alley, so vaguely marked, that I spent over an hour searching for it last night in the dark, after a 10 hour flight. While frustrating, it's all part of the experience, and something I should be ready to deal with several more times over the next couple months!
