Day 17 - Chewang Beach

I spent the day today wandering the main road in Chewang Beach town. The strip is popular for tourists because the majority of the resorts, restaurants and shops on the island are found in this area. I had planned on renting a motorbike, the primary method of travel here, but learned that Koh Samui has the highest traffic fatality rate in the area. The tour operators drive fast and reckless, with no street lights and drivers not paying attention to the lines in the street, I think I'll stick to walking. :)

The beach here is nothing to write home about. It's a little overpopulated, (mostly college kids from Australia), and the water is shallow and a bit murky. There are some great beach bars and places to hang out, though!

About halfway through the day, I got stuck in a torrential downpour and ended up soaked. It's off or low season here - the monsoon rains rolls through pretty regularly. I could see a wall of water moving towards me, and I had walked pretty far up through town where there were no shops to duck into. Oops.

I grabbed a late lunch and cabbed it back to my hotel when it was clear that the rain wasn't going to stop. Watched a couple movies, made myself another yummy Thai dinner and called it a night.
