Day 9 - Bronchitis and a Day in My Cheap Room

Well, I am absolutely, positively sick. No voice, fever, can't hardly swallow, and don't want to get out of bed. I've been sleeping on and off all day, hoping I'll wake up feeling at least a little bit better. Thankfully, I'm not missing out on much. It's a rainy day here, so I couldn't have done much of anything anyway.

My room here in Phuket is great for the $14 a day rate (thanks to the political unrest, detailed below). I had planned on staying in hostels primarily, which run about $8 a night, but for a few bucks more, it's so worth it to have a nice bed and tv. (Especially in instances like this)

A military coup erupted and Martial Law was enacted a month before my trip began. I wanted to speak on this because a few friends and family were concerned or curious about how it would effect or was effecting, my trip. I'm happy to say that life is carrying on as usual here in Phuket. I understand from talking to locals, that this is not an uncommon occurrence. Military coups happen from time to time, but the only sign of them in tourist areas is a curfew, which is hardly ever enforced. The curfew was lifted about a week before I arrived, so I wasn't able to experience this firsthand, but I can say that I have seen no military at all. Only near the capital in Bangkok, is there any sign that anything is happening. Thailand relies heavily on tourism, so even when there is unrest, they make sure it doesn't impact the trillions of dollars they see each year from foreigners. The benefits to tourists that can look past the stuff going on in the capital, are cheap accomodations, airline tickets, and ferry crossings. To err on the side of caution, and because I don't have a strong desire to see the city anyway, I'm planning on steering clear of Bangkok.
