Day 25 - Baan Wok Tum

It was a beautiful, peaceful day here.

I walked up the shoreline, did a little bouldering because the tide was in, and eventually found a nice sandy spot to get some sun. It was sweltering hot here today, so every 10 minutes or so I would hop in the water to try and cool off. The problem is, the water is so shallow along this stretch of coast, that it is bath water warm; almost hot, even. The water is very calm as well, so the deep, cooler water isn't circulating up towards the shore. I went out further (about 100 meters) and the it was still only up to my knees, so I sat down in the sand so the water would be covering more skin. It was feeling fantastic until I felt a pretty decent pinch on my leg. It startled me, so I scrambled to jump up, splashing and flailing for a second. A woman on the beach jumped up and let out a scream - she must have thought I was being attacked by a shark or something, when in reality, I had obviously just invaded some crab's personal space. Comedy. I had to yell "I'm okay," while laughing. She said something in French, and sat back down. Too funny.

I could feel that I was getting a bit too much sun, so I took off up the beach, staying in the shade of the jungly vegetation that climbed the hills on the edge of the beach. I came across a little rope swing in the middle of nowhere, so I hung out there for a bit, just taking it all in.

Maybe it's the fact that I've been alone for 25 days now, or because I was in a very remote Robinson Crusoe type setting, but I decided I would have a little fun trying to crack open one of the many coconuts scattered about. I was out of water and coconut water sounded pretty darn good, so I went at it.

Imagining that I was in fact stranded, I looked for something sharp to cut through the fuzzy outer husk - a large oyster she'll fit the bill. Yeah, that wasn't going to work. Next attempt was just throwing it over and over at jagged corner of a large rock. Nope. How about holding the coconut and rotating it with a smack on the rock every couple inches. Nada. I gave up after 15 minutes. Let's hope I'm never shipwrecked. Lol. It was kind of neat to look around and ponder what you'd possibly do to survive; how you'd build shelter and collect water, etc.

Climbed around on the rocks on the way back towards my bungalow, and got a few cool shots with the gopro.

A monsoon storm rolled through tonight, knocking out the power as far up the coast as I could see from my balcony. Pitch black. Thankfully it didn't last more than an hour. The heavy winds were so strong, they were blowing coconuts out of the trees with force so strong they sounded like bombs hitting the metal roof and the walls of the bungalows. The first couple freaked me out they were so loud. Took me a minute to realize what was happening. I can only imagine how bad it would hurt being hit by one!

Tomorrow, I'll be hopping on a ferry bound for Koh Tao island, just to the north. I'll stay there just long enough to get in a few dives. Almost time to say goodbye to Thailand and explore another amazing country!!!
